The Performance Network: Coverage in Arizona and Beyond

As health care costs continue to soar, plan sponsors are under pressure to provide quality insurance benefits for their workforce while keeping spending under control. Performance networks offer a way to balance both priorities. By building coverage around a curated group of high-performing providers, these health plans are designed to drive care, value and efficiency.

But performance networks can only deliver results if employees opt in. While people are attracted to the affordability these plans offer, they also commonly perceive them as too narrow or restrictive. As a result, they may “play it safe” and select a broader (and more costly) option at open enrollment due to worry that a performance network will limit their coverage, not cover out-of-state dependents, or make routine care difficult during regular travel out of state.

However, not all performance networks are created equally. The Banner|Aetna performance network pairs one of the largest networks of its kind in Arizona with full out-of-state access through the Aetna National Network. The result is a flexible plan that delivers value for employers and employees alike, with coverage that follows members in and out of state.

Coordinated care across five Arizona counties
In Arizona, our Performance Network is built around trusted provider partners that were chosen for one reason: they consistently deliver excellent outcomes. As part of the network, these providers collaborate closely to keep care connected and guide members to the right care in the right setting, helping prevent friction and fragmentation that drives up costs.

For employees, that means a simpler, more integrated experience with fewer duplicate visits, less paperwork, and providers with a proven record of quality patient care.

The network includes:

  • More than 4,000 primary care doctors and 33,000 specialists
  • Over 653,000 behavioral health providers nationwide
  • 53 hospitals, 163 urgent care centers, and 32 walk-in clinics
  • 18 Banner Health centers, plus low-cost virtual care and 24/7 Nurse On-Call*

In-network coverage spans Maricopa, Pinal, Coconino, Gila, and Pima counties and includes more than 800 Banner access points, along with all Banner Health hospitals, MD Anderson Cancer Center, and all HonorHealth facilities.

Coverage that moves with members
Our Performance Network does not stop at the state line. Members have access to care in all 50 states through the Aetna National Network, so coverage goes wherever they do, whether that's a child away at college, a dependent living out of state, or an employee traveling for work. Non-emergency services are covered at in-network rates, and it happens automatically, with no extra paperwork or hurdles to access care. Nationwide, the Aetna National Network includes:

  • 281,000 primary care doctors
  • 573,000 specialists
  • 6,300 hospitals coast to coast

A plan built to meet diverse needs
Employers want a plan that controls costs. Employees want one that does not limit their care. The Banner|Aetna Performance Network helps deliver both, combining a coordinated network across five Arizona counties with nationwide access through the Aetna National Network. It puts quality care and real savings within reach, giving members the flexibility to get the right care, whether they are in or out-of-state.
